Recently we announced that we were working on an app for smartphones running the increasingly popular Android operating system. Well, we have some good news for you as the app is now available for download from the Android Market. For the first two months, i.e., until August, the app will only be available to users of the new Motorola Milestone.

From August onwards, anyone with a smartphone running Android will be able to install the app on their smartphone. This latest development means that XING now has apps available for all of the main mobile systems: BlackBerry, iPhone, Android, and mobile browsers.
XING’s Android app provides its members with access to the platform’s main functions from the comfort of their smartphone. Mobile networking is now even easier as users have immediate and constant access to their own network of contacts and addresses that they can update at any time.

On top of this, users can also find out “What’s new in your network”, and gain instant access to their messaging service via the XING platform. In addition, you can use your smartphone to post a status update about, e.g., a canceled flight or trade fair visit.

For the first two months, i.e., until August, the Android app will only be available for the Motorola Milestone because we teamed up with Motorola to develop the app and cooperate with them during the launch. With their Motorola Milestone members can download the app from the Android Market now, with other Android smartphone owners having access to the app from August 2, 2010. We will of course carry on developing and expanding our mobile apps, and look forward to receiving any feedback you may have in this regard.

Thanks for your feedback. At this stage we’re going to have to ask you to be patient as our new Android app isn’t due for official launch until August 2. From then on, anyone with a smartphone running the Android operating system will be able to download and install the app free of charge. We should have made this clearer in the heading, and we apologize for the oversight on our part.
If you happen to be a Motorola Milestone user, you can in fact use the app before the official launch date. The reason for this is that we entered into a marketing partnership with Motorola to attract as much attention as possible before the app is launched officially, i.e., on August 2.
We hope this information is of use to you.

Thanks for your patience and we hope you give the app a go when it’s officially launched.

The app feels unfinished to me. On first start, it hid the status bar (big no-no). The look and feel is not very Android-y (list items, loading indicators, subtabs, menu without icons), and most important of all: no contact sync. That would be the single most useful thing about a XING Android app. I hope we can get some polish and contact sync before the big public release :)

Did you read the comments on Android market on your App? You definitely should. It is a disaster. And all of them have the same message. How can you bind a programm for an open source platform with a certain handset for marketing reasons.

Your marketing team does not understand open source and what is the idea behind. You behave like the mobile telco companies did in the past. They tried to tie hard- / software it with many products in many ways. And they miserably failed.

The reputation you lost with this marketing activity is quite high.

Reputation is important,

There’s one really big feature that’s missing in the app. Make it a contacts provider (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/ContactsContract.html) so confirmed contacts show up in your regular contact list in Android 2.0 and above.

I’d go as far as saying that’s the only thing I’m really looking for, anything else Xing has to offer can wait.

You are not supposed to do colored notification icons. See Icon UI Guidelines: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/icon_design.html#statusbarstructure

Way to go, Xing. At least ther is an App. I use Xing as a phonebook, however, and I’d like it to automatically display my contacts in the Android contacts. I think you should invest as much in the mobile user experience as in the desktop one, if not more. The web, and esp. social networks are increasingly used from mobile phones. Personally, I would use Xing a LOT more if your Android App was better.
