Welcome to the third and for now last part in our maximiXING series on careers and job searches. After discussing here profile settings and what you can do with Groups, today we take a look at XING Jobs, the job market on our platform. At first glance, this is all very easy to use – and that’s true! But there are a few good ways you can optimize your search to handle different challenges.
A click on the “Jobs” menu takes you to the Jobs Overview page for job listings. That was easy….. Now enter a key word (like “Editor”, “Marketing” or “PHP”) in the search form and click “Search”. This pulls up a page with all your search results – and, most important, lets you rate them. You can give a job one to four points – your rating will be immediately saved. The more jobs you rate, the better are the search results generated by your profile’s search algorithm.
You can also set your start page to display a box with jobs which might be of potential interest to you. Now the good jobs come your way practically all on their own.
Our brand new “Job Alerts” function also gives you even more possibilities, as explained by my colleague Ingo Helmke. Please note: your search activity on XING Jobs is never visible to other users under any circumstances. You need never worry about committing any potential indiscretions at your current workplace.
You can also refine your search query. Click “Advanced Jobsearch” to filter by keywords for example, or by type of position, company or region. You should try our new Job Alerts especially for complex searches. The function saves your search criteria to your profile and sends you new job listings by email.

Once you've saved a search, you can manage it on the advanced search page.
Find a good job listing? Take advantage of all the possibilities XING offers you for optimizing your application for a position. Standard on our platform is the wealth of information contained in a XING job listing. Take a close look at the job offer and the required skills. Visit the profile of the person listing the job. Check both of your common contacts to see if a good friend or (ex) colleague might be able to serve as a reference. If necessary, adjust your “Haves” and “Wants” entries and look at which group could be relevant for you. But make sure to do this before you send out your application or contact the person. If you are already “under consideration”, such changes could damage your credibility. And of course, be yourself. You want to make a good impression, promote your strengths but be honest. If you think PHP is some new-fangled plastic, an incorrect claim in your profile might cause you some damage in the long term.
And so, we come to a close of our Job Search trilogy for now. If you have any questions or would like to see an “Extended Edition”, simply write a comment here.
