I think it’s really difficult to find an international brand name. Xing is apparently pretty cool for English and Chinese speaking people, so it is a good idea to use this name for expanding business in the United States and Asia. For my German ears it does not sound very nice but that doesn’t really matter. In Germany word of mouth should be enough to get the few remaining people into the community.

Xing or whatever, it’s a concerted re-branding effort which we all support on as long as it’s an open busines club system. We’ll expect good things to happen in the near future. Just an observation from this part of the world where Xing means a lot and more:

Xing (in pinyin, the Chinese phonetics)=sex,star,OK,shape,surname,lucky…

Isn’t that interesting.

Changing names are always a traumatic process for everyone that has got attatched to a name somehow. I have helped companies do it so many times in my 20+ years of branding experience. Everytime the same things happens, first the new name feels akward, then it becomes OK, and then finally loved even by those who first were not enthusiastic. Maybe openBC is an exeption. I doubt it…since XING from my professional experience is a really great and differentiating name.

Ich hoffe für alle enthusiastischen openBC-Bewohner wie mich, dass Thomas Gad recht behält, auch wenn ich mir heute noch nicht vorstellen kann, jemanden in XING einzuladen. openBC ist nun einmal sprechender für Nicht-Chinesen – und davon soll es ja hier und da noch ein paar geben

Ich kann mich Anja nur anschließen und hoffe, dass auch ich mich irgendwann an den Namen gewöhnen werde. Momentan finde ich den Namen OpenBC wesentlich besser denn er sagt aus, was es ist. Eine Business Community. Das neue Xing Logo erinnert mich stark an das Branding von Maxdome mit dem X. Wieso besteht eigentlich der Bedarf den Namen zu ändern?

Hmm. My first association with “xing” was not so favorable: I had to think of the English expression “x-ing”, which, as well being as an abbreviation for “crossing”, means (according to Merriam-Webster):
x’ing /’ek-si[ng]/
1 : to mark with an x
2 : to cancel or obliterate with a series of x’s — usually used with out

So “x-ing somebody” could well mean to cross him off a list – hardly what the company formerly known as openBC is all about!

XING has more than one definition and can mean different things in different languages. This is one of the reasons why this name is so suitable for us as an international platform.

The features you value on openBC will continue to be available in the future – just under an new name with a different logo.
