One of the amazing things about the TED conference is that you are guaranteed to see something astounding that changes your view of the world.

Now I considered myself fairly well informed on the environment as I do like to keep up to date on the literature.

Last night and this morning I had the extraordinary experience of seeing a tour-de-force about global warming presented in brilliant style by Al Gore, who clearly has amazing access to the best climate data and experience and who presents the whole story with such clarity,  simplicity and veracity that you just get it that we are all in serious trouble RIGHT NOW!

I am convinced that so called "global warming" is in fact a climatic catastrophe that is unfolding around us due to rising  CO2 and methane levels  and that this  is the most important and urgent issue facing humanity today by far.

I am sure that the  climatic catastrophe will be (apart from the end of the wold as we know it)  extremely bad for business as, frankly, it is in the interest of all businesses that our customers stay alive! (Given the recent super storm activity we have had I am sure all re-insurers already agree)

So, I am committed that we do something right now about this and that for a start the best thing we can do is raise awareness in the world and particularly in the business community.

I call on everyone to follow my lead and post links to  the www.climatecrisis.net web site as a start as Al Gore has made a compelling movie that is frankly undeniable and everyone needs to see this.

I am also looking to get a concise message from Mr  Gore  so that the entire business community can share this vital message on their home pages.

As this critical message is dispersed and accepted we need to focus on practical steps we can all take to turn humanity from this pathway to disaster.

We broke it so lets fix it!

Is this the same guy who invented the Internet?

As hard as it is to believe that he can present in brilliant style, if we have to believe everyone who can talk brilliantly, then we would see some real catastrophes…

The “experts” are nowhere near a consensus on this issue.

It would be good to get a video by the way.

Hi Fillip,

I invite you to go to the recent source papers and check the current opinion of all the experts.

It was not just the presentation it was the overwhelming amount of compelling source data and the number of verifiable references cited.

He has really done his homework on this and it showed.

Dear Bill,

I recommend reading “State of Fear” by Michael Crichton. Not a brilliant thriller, but it hints at how “overwhelming” the “compelling data sources” really are.

Not that I’m in favour of any direction. But I agree to Filip that experts don’t agree at all. We might as well get a new ice age.

Hi Martin,

I also invite you check the current state of scientific publications on the subject in the last 2 years there has been a shift in peer reviewed journals that support AL Gore’s statements.

On the other hadn popular media and culture has not yet caught up with the hard science.

I am working to procure a video of the presentation to post.

Consensus? Check with the scientists – not the media.

Unfortunately the mainstream media have a policy of providing a ‘ballanced’ view and therefore give far too much time to the climate change deniers (http://www.desmogblog.com).

Please do some research before again making the claim that there is ‘far from a consensus’ and provide the names of three well-respected _climate_ scientists that deny that climate change is real. First make sure that they are not on the payroll (directly or indirectly) of any companies whose income is likely to be affected if they are asked to reduce their emissions. (the site above may help in this effort)

You may want to first do a little bit reading on the subject and then decide if it isn’t perhaps sensible to take a precautionary approach. I include some useful links below.

http://www.millenniumassessment.org (Results of a 1300 scientist 4 year study that were vetted by UN members such as the US before being published. Goes well beyond climate change to all of the serious issues facing our species. Sobering reading indeed.)

I am thrilled that Al Gore’s film is circulating in TED circles…it’s time that the technological wizards come together to create a green corporation whose mission is to be a catalyst for a green renaissance in this country.

A kind of homeopathic remedy to the ecological crisi – Tree Free Paper, hemp Plastics, cars that run on air (yes they exist out of Paris, France)…
The bottom line is what we consume is impacting the planet…

Filip,

When did Gore say that he invented the Internet?

Would you show the quote and source?

James on 04.03.2006 at 01:54h CET

Martin,

What are the credentials of Michael Crichton?
Is he a climatologist?
Or he simply cherrypicks some data to support his pre-packaged position?

Sort of ‘Saddam has a nuclear program because we want to invade Iraq’.
